Abdominal laxity

Abdominal laxity: what it means

Laxity is a term that in medicine synthesizes looseness and sagging of tissues.

Abdominal laxity is a sign that can occur simply due to natural aging or in association with abdominal wall disease such as rectus abdominis diastasis or diastasis recti.

Therefore, it makes no sense to talk about abdominal laxity without identifying the specific causes that caused it.

The abdominal wall is composed of multiple layers arranged on top of each other and thus influencing each other in functional and aesthetic aspects.

diastasis recti affects the load-bearing layer of the abdominal wall ie. tendon-aponeuoroptic and results in the loss of the restraining effect of the abdominal wall.

This results to varying degrees in a consequent release (laxity) of tissues visible sometimes in some positions more than in others and in traction.

Abdominal laxity: how to solve

To resolve abdominal laxity, one must obviously first identify the cause.

As is frequently the case if the laxity is due to both structural failure (diastasis recti) and loss of surface tissue texture (natural aging), two treatments consisting of muscle-tendon reconstructive surgery for diastasis and surface surgery for removal of excess skin will need to be combined to resolve effectively.
