Diastasis recti

Diastasis recti o rectus abdominis diastasis:

Diastasis recti occurs due to the defibration of the structure that joins the two rectus muscles, called the linea alba.

linea alba is composed primarily of connective tissue organized, at the microscopic level, into a complex architectural weave suitable for withstanding intense physical loads.

In some situations, such as pregnancy, rapid weight gain or excessive physical/sports load, an irreversible weakening of the fibers that make up the fiber occurs.

As a result of the weakening of linea alba the rectus abdominis muscles move away from each other, resulting in structural failure of the abdominal wall.

diastasis recti: epidiomological hints

Themajority of patients with this condition are women after pregnancy, although there is a considerable percentage of men and women who develop the condition as a result of excessive physical/sports load.

To a lesser extent, we also find congenitally predisposed patients who develop diastasis of the rectus abdominis muscles without further concause.

diastasis recti: main signs and symptoms

The main signs and symptoms of diastasis recti consist of:

The abnormal postprandial swelling typical of abdominal rectus muscle diastasis is caused by structural failure of the abdominal wall.

Since the rectus muscles are separated and cannot exert their normal function of containment, even the slightest gastric dilation is sufficient to disproportionately enlarge the overall abdominal volume.

When standing (orthostatism) the abdominal volume is greatly increased compared to the supine position (lying down).

The lumbar segment of the spine is negatively affected by the functional deficit of the abdominal wall. There is in fact an important balance between the group of dorsal and abdominal muscles that in this pathology is unbalanced in favor of the dorsal muscles.

Therefore, an accentuation of the lumbar lordosis occurs, which is the origin of an incorrect posture and of painful phenomena.

Often abdominal rectus abdominis diastasis sufferers also present with dysfunctions of the urinary sphere mainly related to poor contractility of the abdominal wall. As a result there is incomplete bladder emptying during urination.

diastasis recti: blemishes

Diastasis is manifested by an increase in abdominal volume in disharmony with body proportions.

There is often a deformity visible during some physical exertion at the midline. The umbilicus becomes everted and prominent due to loss of its base of implantation at the linea alba and umbilical hernias that are frequently associated with the condition.

Also very frequently we find excess, weakened and thinned skin as well as numerous stretch marks, especially in the periumbilical region and lower abdominal quadrants.

diastasis recti: how to cure it

Physical activity on the abdominal wall can strengthen the muscles, but it cannot repair damaged connective connective fibers.

For this reason, treatment is essentially surgical-reconstructive.

There is a wide variety of techniques for repairing diastasis recti, ranging from "Open" or "open" (traditional surgical techniques) to more modern and advanced techniques for robotic route.
